Shortly after launch, the folks over at Digital Foundry took a good look at Oblivion Remastered and came away impressed with the Unreal Engine 5 tech powering this remake, even if issues were present - particularly on Xbox Series S. Since then, we've seen a hotfix go live, so the tech-focused outlet has taken another, deeper look at the Xbox Game Pass title that shadow dropped in April.
And... the results are still incredibly mixed, with further problems presenting themselves with more playtime. Speaking of which, the outlet actually reckons that game performance degrades over time — possibly due to a memory leak — which is something we've experienced with Bethesda games of old on console.
"The more we look at the console versions, the more problematic they become. No platform is spared of issues: whether it's PS5, PS5 Pro or either Xbox Series machine, all struggle with traversal hitches while roaming the open world. Secondly, there's major sub-60fps frame-rates, where I've also discovered that performance slowly degrades with more playing time - quite possibly down to a memory leak."
DF describes the current state of Oblivion Remastered as "a dire position for any remaster to be in", which may sound a little dramatic - but we suppose one of the major wins with these sorts of remasters tends to be fixed performance in comparison to older, more dated versions of games. Clearly, performance hasn't quite been sorted out in Oblivion Remastered just yet.
"Returning to Oblivion Remastered for a second round of console testing brings a great many issues to light. This isn't a PS5 versus Xbox issue; all are affected by hitching, crashes, bugs, major sub-60fps drops, and an uneven 30fps line on quality mode."
Still, at least the team is open to taking on feedback for future patches. At the end of last month, it was discovered that Bethesda has been asking fans to ping over suggestions to the company via its official Discord channel - as developer Virtuos continues to work on bringing Oblivion Remastered up to snuff.
