Roundup: Revenge Of The Savage Planet Off To A Strong Start Ahead Of Xbox Game Pass Launch

Revenge of the Savage Planet is Microsoft's biggest Xbox Game Pass addition of the week right now, and ahead of its arrival on Thursday, a batch of early reviews have just started to hit the web - including our own write-up at Pure Xbox.

So, we'll quickly summarise our Pure Xbox review down below, alongside a bunch of other critic opinions on Revenge of the Savage Planet so far:

Pure Xbox (Unscored)

"Revenge of the Savage Planet is such a very well made thing. It controls precisely, the new viewpoint makes locating items, fighting and surveying some amazing alien vistas all the more cohesive, and as a result, from what I've played so far, this is a sequel that not only improves on its predecessor, it honestly feels more like a full-on reboot."

But Why Tho? (9/10)

"Revenge of the Savage Planet is a testament to building on a solid foundation and letting creativity lead the way. Whether it's the puzzles, the platforming, the creature design, or the ace comedic dialogue, this game delivers in every single way. Co-op or solo, it's just pure joy, and it comes from a satirical take on working that hits close to home."

Game Rant (9/10)

"The word that immediately came to mind when first jumping into Return of the Savage Planet is ‘joyful.’ It's an out-of-pocket word to pick for a goofy indie space exploration title, but immediately after booting it up, everything from the voice acting and setting to gameplay and humor made me smile. There’s an undercurrent of love found on every screen, with the small team behind the game weaving their passion and playfulness into each pixel."

Press Start (8/10)

"Revenge of the Savage Planet is a confident sequel that expands on the original game in all the right ways. Its five densely packed planets are a joy to uncover, more importantly, invite exploration in all the right ways. While the humour is a bit hit or miss and I will personally always miss the first-person, Metroid Prime-like gameplay, some strong level design and a satisfying loop of exploration makes Revenge of the Savage Planet a strong but quirky debut for Raccoon Logic."

Lords of Gaming (8/10)

"Revenge of the Savage Planet takes everything from its predecessor and cranks it up to 11. Despite some technical rough edges here and there, the game is an absolute blast to play. Who knew that revenge is a dish best served weird."

Dualshockers 7.5/10)

"I had a blast playing Revenge Of The Savage Planet. The varied planets are gorgeous, the goofy creatures are charming, and the absurdist Rick And Morty meets Tim And Eric humor lands more often than not. Exploring vibrant new worlds and cataloging all the flora and capturable fauna scratches an itch for any sci-fi fan that wishes they lived in a timeline where space exploration was possible. Unfortunately, while combat does bring some interesting things to the table with elemental synergies at play, the gunplay is pretty basic despite being a frequent and expected part of your expedition."

GamesRadar (3.5/5)

"Revenge of the Savage Planet is a large, ambitious adventure with great visuals, varied gameplay, and split-screen co-op to boot that's a great sequel to an underrated sci-fi platformer. However, the crude humour and corporate satire can be grating and the whole game feels like a collection of shallow busywork – though the design of the final few hours is exemplary."

The Gamer (6/10)

"On a basic level, Revenge of the Savage Planet is pretty fun. Despite shotgunning most of it in two days, I was happy to play more. Moving from a double jump to a grapple to a rail grind to a stomp is simple fun. But it feels like some identity has been lost in the game's expansion. In broadening out to encompass four planets and change, Revenge loses touch with the series' foundations."

At the time of writing, Revenge of the Savage Planet has a Metacritic score of 80 and an OpenCritic rating of 81 - both of which are some solid aggregate scores overall. The day one release drops for Xbox Game Pass on May 8th, 2025.
